Hobby Notes for the Black (Anery) Corn Snake

Anerythristic (anerythristic A, Sometimes called black albino) are the complement to amelanism. The inherited recessive mutation of lacking erythrin (red, yellow, and orange) pigments produces a snake that is mostly black, gray and brown. When mature, many type A anerythristic Corn Snakes develop yellow on their neck regions. In 1984 a Type B anerythristic Corn Snake was caught in the wild; it is the ancestor of anerythristics missing the yellow neck regions. Similar snakes include: stonewashed-copper or light brown saddle marks; charcoal (aka muted anerythristic, Pine Island anerythristic); type B anerythristic, very low contrast with shades of gray on white and black background.

Corn snakes (Elaphe (Pantherophis) guttata) have become the most extensively produced snake in captivity, and for good reason. They are docile, suit well to captive conditions, and are reasonably sized. They are certainly a good beginner snake, possibly the best. Corn snakes can live up to 20 years.

Size of a Corn Snake

Babies are generally 12 to 14 inches and can grow to an average adult lenth of 3.5 to 5 feet and sometimes more.

Feeding a Corn Snake

Appropriately sized mice, rats, or small birds. Babies will often eat lizards or frogs in addition to baby rodents.

Caging Requirements for a Corn Snake

Housing/Habitat: Provide a substrate of aspen or wood mulch at least 1" deep. A small, heavy bowl of fresh water and shelter, such as a hollow log or concave rock or plastic "cave" are the three essential pieces of cage furniture. A branch for climbing may be appreciated.

Temperature: Temperature range can vary from upper 60s (night) to upper 80s (day).
