Information and Care Sheet for the Fire Bellied Toad

Fire Belly Toads (Bonbina orientalis) are enjoyable to keep. They are brightly colored, diurnal, and hardy; a combination that is hard to beat. Most are grass green with a bright red or orange ventral side. Their entire body is covered in black spots and blotches, which become thicker on their red belly, and often form a reticulated pattern. Males are usually smaller than females, and can also be distinguished by their more streamlined appearance and vocal ability.

Size of a Fire Belly Toad

Fire Belly Toads mature to a size between 1.5 and 2.5 inches (3.8 and 6.3 cm).

Feeding Your Fire Belly Toads

Fire Belly Toads have a voracious appetite. You can feed them crickets, waxworms, earthworms, or mealworms coated in calcium and vitamin powder.

Caging Requirements for Your Fire Belly Toads

Housing/Habitat: They should be housed in a humid tropical viquarium landscaped with plenty of live or artificial plants and an area of land for basking. The viquarium must be well ventilated. Ventilation can be controlled through the use of a screen aquarium top and a glass canopy partially covering the screen.

Lighting: Full spectrum fluorescent UV bulbs would be a good choice. Avoid basking type lighting, which would dry out the terrarium and be detrimental to the frogs.

Temperature: 75° -86°F

Water: A bowl of clean, dechlorinated water should always be available. Mist daily with dechlorinated water.
