Hobby Notes for the Green Iguana (2010 Baby)Green Iguanas (Iguana iguana) are native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. They are mainly arboreal and live in close proximity to water. Iguanas are excellent swimmers and are most active during the day. These popular lizards grow fairly large and are territorial so it is best to keep them singly. Iguanas can live 15 to 20 years in captivity. Vitamin/calcium powder should be sprinkled on their food 3 times a week Caging Requirements for a Green IguanaHousing/Habitat: Their natural habitat can be simulated with an aquarium equipped with an under tank heater at one end. The bottom of the aquarium should be covered with reptile turf for easy maintenance, landscaped with well-anchored vines, branches, rocks, and driftwood for basking and climbing. It is also important to provide a large enough hiding place for the iguana to conceal his entire body. Frequently misting the terrarium will help provide the necessary humidity. Lighting: Full spectrum fluorescent high UVB bulbs and a basking light are required. Iguanas require 12 hours of full spectrum light daily.
