Information and Care Sheet for the Savannah Monitor

The Savannah Monitor (Varanus exanthematicus) is a medium-sized monitor that lives an average of 15 to 20 years. Savannah Monitors are generally brown or gray in color with white spots ringed in darker brown (or gray) across the back, with the tail banded in lighter shades of brown or gray. The head is broad and the tongue blue. They are heavy-bodied, and the tail is quite thick and fairly short. Savannah monitors in general are known for their tractability, and can become quite tame. These monitors will live in communal groups, but adult males may fight. They are generally tolerant of other Savannah monitors as well as other monitor species. Savannah Monitors are one of the easiest monitors to care for and keep.

Size of a Savannah Monitor

Available babies are 6 to 9 inches and the juveniles are typically 10 to 14 inches. Average adult length is 4 feet.

Insects, fish, crayfish, rodents, birds, eggs.

Caging Requirements for Your Savannah Monitor

Housing/Habitat: Very large and sturdy cage with stout limbs for climbing, and a large, heavy water dish. Substrate of cypress mulch. Hide box or large, flat stone or bark for hiding.

Temperatures: Temps 80 - 90F with basking area of 95F+.
