Brown Basilisk for Sale

Brown Basilisks (Basiliscus vittatus) are native to Central America where they live in tropical rain forests often near bodies of water. Although they spend most of their life in trees, basilisks are also excellent swimmers. Their three crests are on the head, along the body and along the tail. They usually appear in brown or olive brown with black stripes. The stripes are usually only on the flanks and on the dorsal crest. They also have a white stripe, which extends from the eyes to the rear legs. The males have a larger crest than the females.

Along with the Common Basilisk they have the nickname "Jesus Lizard" because when fleeing from a predator, they are very fast and can even run on top of the water. Basilisks actually have large hind feet with flaps of skin between each toe. The fact that they move quickly across the water, aided by their web-like feet, gives them the appearance of "walking on water".

Size of a Brown Basilisk 

Male Brown Basilisks can reach 30 inches in length and females are somewhat smaller.

Feeding Your Brown Basilisk

Crickets, mealworms, earthworms, goldfish, beef heart strips, and pinkie mice, coated in calcium and vitamin powder. Occasionally, some fruit and leafy greens should be offered.

Caging Requirements for a Brown Basilisk

Housing/Habitat: Their natural habitat can be simulated with an aquarium equipped with an under tank heater at one end. The bottom of the aquarium should be covered with a jungle mix type litter, landscaped with plants and branches for basking and climbing.

Lighting: Full spectrum fluorescent UV bulbs and a basking light are required.

Temperature: Day 75°- 88°F Night 68°-75°F

Water: A large container of clean water should always be available for swimming, soaking, and drinking must be provided. The water must be changed frequently as the lizards also use the water for defecation.

Humidity: Heating the water bowl will provide a constant source of humidity. In addition, frequent misting of the terrarium and substrate will provide the necessary humidity.

Sexing
