Skinks as Pets (Buy a Skink, Skinks for Sale)

Skinks look roughly like true lizards, but most species have no pronounced neck and sport relatively small legs. Several genera (e.g., Typhlosaurus) have no limbs at all, others, such as Neoseps, have only reduced limbs. Often, their way of moving resembles that of snakes more than that of other lizards. Skinks usually have long, tapering tails that can be shed and regenerated. Most skink are medium sized with a length from the snout to the vent of up to 5 inches.

Feeding Skinks as Pets (Food)

When it comes to food, skinks are true omnivores. To keep your pet skink happy, make sure they get the appropriate amounts of fruits, vegetables and meats. While skinks prefer live insects as their protein, dog food is known to be good for them as well. A well balanced nutritional diet for your pet skink consists of about 60 percent fruits and veggies along with 40 percent of protein.

Blue Tongue Skinks as Pets

There are several species of blue tongued skinks, but the most commonly found are subspecies of Tiliqua scincoides, especially Tiliqua scincoides scincoides, the common or eastern blue tongued skink (information on this page refers primarily to this species). They are fairly large with a mature size of around 20 inches (snout to vent length of 12 inches) and can live 10-20 years with proper care. Blue tongue skinks are ground dwellers with a flattened, elongated body (somewhat resembles a snake in appearance). Blue tongue skinks are quite docile and gentle, and easily tamed and handled. Buy a Blue Tongue Skink.

Fire Skinks as Pets

Fire Skinks are beautiful looking and make a great exotic pet. Adult fire skinks will reach approximately 10-14 inches in length, with males being slightly larger. Fire skinks have beautiful coloration. They typically have a gold back with black, red and white fire pattern on the side. They have a black and white throat region with a white speckled black tail and smooth scales. Fire skinks have a very mild temperament but are best kept separate from one another. Females could be kept safely together, but never two males. Male and female pairs should only be kept together during breeding season. Fire skinks can live between 10-20 years with good care.
