Burmese Pythons for Sale

Pythons belong to the family Boidae, which is a sub group of the super-family Booidea There are about 25 species of python known. All pythons are constrictors, and none are venemous. All of them lay eggs. (well, that is to say that the female pythons lay eggs). A python will typically lay from fifteen to one hundred eggs.

Many people are fascinated by the thought to buy a python as a pet and in some respects, they do make very good candidates as they tend to be docile and are non-venomous (although they can still be dangerous due to their constricting powers). Certain species of pythons for sale make very good pets and others make unsuitable pets, mainly because of the huge size they can grow to as adults and the potential danger from their powerful bodies.

Ball Pythons as Pets

Royal pythons are also known as 'ball' pythons, particularly in the United States, due to their tendency to cur into a tight ball when they feel threatened. In the wild, they are found in Central and Western Africa and will frequent both the ground and trees, usually being most active around dusk and dawn. With proper care, these pythons will have a long lifespan; possibly up to 50 years, although 20-30 years is typical.

Due to their smaller size compared to other pythons and commonly docile temperament, these snakes are bred in captivity and have become popular as pets. Juveniles tend to be more aggressive at first, but typically calm down as they get used to human contact. Wild-caught specimens have greater difficulty adapting to a captive environment, which can result in refusal to feed, and they generally carry internal or external parasites which must be eliminated by administering anti-parasitic drugs. Specimens have survived for over 40 years in captivity. In captivity, most adult Python regius should be kept in a minimum of a 20 US gallons long glass tank, as these pythons are ground dwellers and are highly secretive and largely sedentary. Some large females may require cages up to the size of a 40 US gallons long tank. Also, at least two hiding places should be provided at different ends of the tank, one should have a thermostat-controlled heating pad under it to allow the animal to regulate its temperature. Be aware that most snakes are escape artists, therefore the tank should have a locking lid. Juveniles in particular may be stressed by overly large cages that do not have sufficient small hiding spaces. Controlled temperatures of 80 °F with a 90 °F basking area on one end of the cage are necessary for proper health. Humidity should be maintained at 60% to 80% with dry substrate.

Burmese Pythons for Sale

The Burmese Python (Python molurus bivittatus) is the largest subspecies of the Indian Python and one of the 6 largest snakes in the world, native to a big variation of tropic and subtropic areas of Southern- and Southeast Asia. They are often found near water and are sometimes semi-aquatic, but can also be found in trees. Wild individuals average 12 ft long, but may reach up to 19 ft.

Burmese Pythons are light-coloured snakes with many brown blotches bordered in black down the back. The perceived attractiveness of their skin pattern contributes to their popularity with both reptile keepers and the leather industry. The pattern is similar in colour, but different in actual pattern to the African Rock Python (Python sebae), sometimes resulting in confusion of the two species outside of their natural habitats.

Burmese Pythons are often sold as pets, and are made popular by their attractive colour and apparently easy-going nature. However, these animals have a rapid growth rate, and will often exceed 2.1 meters (7 feet) in length in a year if cared for and fed properly. By age 4, they will have reached their adult size, though they continue growing very slowly throughout their lives, which may exceed 20 years.

While this species has a reputation for docility, they are very powerful animals, capable of inflicting severe bites or even killing a keeper by constriction. They also consume large amounts of food, and due to their size, require large, often custom-built, secure enclosures, which can be very expensive. As a result some are released to the wild by pet owners.

The Burmese Python is frequently captive bred for colour, pattern, and more recently size. The albino form of the Burmese Python is especially popular and is the most widely available morph. They are white with patterns in butterscotch yellow and burnt orange. There are also "Labyrinth" specimens, which have mazelike patterns, khaki coloured "Green" Burmese Pythons, and "Granite" Burmese Pythons, which have many small angular spots. Breeders have recently begun working with an island lineage of Burmese Pythons. Early reports indicate that these "Dwarf" Burmese have a slightly different colouring and pattern than their mainland relatives and do not grow much over 2.1 metres (7 ft) long. The "Dwarf" Burmese were first captively reproduced by Beau Lewis of Arizona, USA. One of the most sought-after of these variations is the leucistic Burmese. This particular variety is very rare, and has only recently (2008/2009) been reproduced in captivity as the super form of the co-dominant hypomelanistic trait. This snake is entirely bright white with no pattern and black eyes, thus precluding it from being a true albino. The first Caramel Burmese Python was successfully hatched out on May 15, 2008 by Mark Andrews and Jason Hormann of Kansas City, KS. This snake has caramel coloured pattern with milk chocolate eyes.

Reticulated Pythons for Sale

Python reticulatus, also known as the (Asiatic) reticulated python or regal python, is a species of python found in Southeast Asia. Adults grow to over 28 feet in length and are the world's longest snakes and longest reptile, but are not the most heavily built. Like all pythons, they are non-venomous constrictors and normally not considered dangerous to humans, even though large specimens are powerful enough to kill an adult and attacks are occasionally reported.

An excellent swimmer, it has even been reported far out at sea and has consequently colonized many small islands within its range. The specific name is Latin meaning net-like, or reticulated, and is a reference to the complex color pattern.

The color pattern is a complex geometric pattern that incorporates different colors. The back typically has a series of irregular diamond shapes which are flanked by smaller markings with light centers. In this species' wide range, much variation of size, color, and markings commonly occurs. In zoo exhibits the color pattern may seem garish, but in a shadowy jungle environment amid fallen leaves and debris it allows them to virtually disappear. Called a disruptive coloration, it protects them from predators and helps them to catch their prey.

Increased popularity in the pet trade is due largely to increased efforts in captive breeding and selectively bred mutations such as the "albino" and "tiger" strains. They can make good captives, but keepers should have previous experience with such large constrictors to ensure safety to both animal and keeper. Although their interactivity and beauty draws much attention, some feel they are unpredictable. They do not attack humans by nature, but will bite and possibly constrict if they feel threatened, or mistake a hand for food. While not venomous, large pythons can inflict serious injuries, sometimes requiring stitches.

Blood Pythons for Sale

Python curtus is a species of Pythonidae, a non-venomous snake found in Southeast Asia. Three subspecies are recognized, including the nominate subspecies described here, although some authors describe these as species. Adults grow to 5-8 feet in length and are heavily built. The tail is extremely short relative to the overall length. The color pattern consists of a beige, tan or grayish-brown ground color overlaid with blotches that are brick to blood-red in color.

Common Names: Short python, blood python, short-tailed python, black blood python, Sumatran short-tailed python, Sumatran blood python.

The subspecies P. c. brongersmai was elevated to a full species by Pauwels et al. (2000), while P. c. breitensteini was given species status by Keogh, Barker and Shine (2001). The divergence of this monophyletic group is presumed to be isolation of populations resulting from changes in sea levels. Phylogenetic analysis of the Malay population, P. curtus brongersmai, suggests a close affinity with the nominal subspecies, however, P. curtus breitensteini was determined to be as genetically distant from the original type as the species Python reticulatus.

Choosing Your Python

Remember to always choose a captive bred python as these will not only be easier to tame and handle but will be in better health, have fewer parasites and be less stressed from capture and transport. Captive-bred snakes may be more expensive and hard to locate but they are well worth the extra effort.

Always check the snake's body and make sure it is well-rounded, with clean, smooth skin. Check the eyes and vent for any signs of respiratory problems, such as wheezing and bubbles around the nostrils. A vet check as soon as possible after bringing your snake home is vital to assess stool samples and check for parasite load.

Pythons are naturally curious snakes so look for one that is alert and inquisitive and will gently grip your hand or arms when handled. Young snakes can be skittish but they will generally calm down after a bit of handling. It is also a good idea to ask the breeder for a feeding demonstration to make sure that the snake is eating well, as these pythons are notoriously fussy eaters.

Housing Your Python

As they are not generally very active, a smaller enclosure can suffice for your python, for example, a 10-20 gallon tank for juveniles and a 30-gallon tank for adults. However, as with all snakes, the bigger the better as captivity can never compare with the freedom of the wild so try to give the most space that you can afford. Remember that like many other snakes, pythons can be good escape artists so make sure you have a securely fitted top to the tank.

You can use a variety of materials as substrate, such as shredded bark, newsprint or Astroturf. The last is probably the easiest and most popular, with soiled sections easily replaced. Pythons like to have sturdy branches to climb on and at least one dark hiding place where they can feel securely enclosed. A humidity retreat is also a good idea, just a covered container lined with damp sphagnum moss will do. In addition, you will need to provide a water bowl large enough for the python to soak in, something that is especially important during the shedding period.

They will need a daytime temperature gradient ranging from 80 - 85 F (27 - 29 C) and a basking spot of around 90 F (32 C). At night, you can let temperatures fall to 75 F (23 -24 C) as long as an area of 80 F is maintained. Create the temperature gradient using undertank heating pads, supplemented with an incandescent bulb or ceramic heating element for the basking spot. Make sure that the bulb or heating element is screened or well out of the snake's reach to prevent burns and avoid using 'hot rocks' in the tank as these can cause very nasty burns. Unlike many other snakes, pythons do not need a UV light source as they are nocturnal. However, this also means that an incandescent bulb should be replaced by a red, blue or black bulb at night to preserve the light/dark cycle that the python needs.

Feeding Your Python

In one respect, feeding your python will be easy as they only eat mice or small to medium sized rats so there is no need to worry about variety in the diet. In addition, adults normally only need to be fed every week or fortnight, although younger snakes will need to be supplied with pinkie mice every 5-7days. Always use pre-killed prey to prevent injury to the python and using a pair of forceps to dangle the prey in front of the snake will usually trigger feeding interest.

It is a good idea to move the python into a separate enclosure for feeding. Not only will this help with taming the snake, it will also associate the separate enclosure with feeding and thus be less likely to confuse your hand with prey when you reach into its normal enclosure for handling.

As said earlier, these snakes are known for fasting for long periods and as long as body weight is maintained and the python's condition looks good overall, there is no need to panic. If the fast is causing weight loss or goes on for longer than a couple of months, consult your vet or a reptile expert. You might need to change some aspects of your husbandry or even just try some tricks to tempt your python's palate, such as dipping the mice in chicken broth.
