The snake is named Stimson's python in honor of A. F. Stimson of the British Museum, but is commonly and incorrectly referred to as Stimpson's python (Antaresia stimpsoni). The species is also referred as the Large-blotched python for the patterns of its markings, or in reference to its genus as an Inland Children's python. The species is kept as a pet and successfully bred in captivity. It is easily handled and rarely bites, and is listed as an easily maintained snake. Feeding a Stimson's PythonStimson's pythons will go through the whole spectrum of adequately sized rodents. These will be small pinkey mice, fuzzy mice, hoppers and eventually adult mice. Most adults will eat adult mice and small rats. Some will eat 2 - 3 adult mice at one setting. Regular feedings, usually once a week, will ensure the snakes growth and health. The size of the rodent should not ecceed the snakes girth, and smaller, growing snakes can take multiple smaller items. Housing/Caging for a Stimson's PythonAntaresia snakes live in rigid and diverse environments in Australia. They easily adopt to live in captivity. They are hardy and forgiving snakes - which does not mean that there should be less care taken when keeping them. The basic setup is quite simple - same as for most commonly kept snakes (including colubrids). They can be kept in naturalistic vivariums, with stones and branches, making them a pretty display animals.
