Information and Care Sheet for the 100 Flower Rat Snake
The Flower Ratsnake (Elaphe moellendorffi) is a very large ratsnake for the advanced keeper.
In the wild the Flower Ratsnake is found in thick forests and frequently in caves. They seem to prefer low light conditions, cool temperature and are active mainly in the early morning and late afternoon hours. They are found in South East China and North Vietnam.
Other Common Names: Moellendorff's Ratsnake, Red-headed Ratsnake, Hundred Flower Snake,
Now Orthriophis moellendorffi: Orthriophis is a genus of four ratsnakes that were formerly assigned to Elaphe. Based on DNA evidence Utiger et al. elected to create this genus in 2002.
Size of the Flower Ratsnake
The Flower Ratsnake is known to reach 8 feet in length, so they need a large terrarium, and males are known to grow larger than females.
Feeding a Flower Ratsnake
They prefer smaller food items with pink and fuzzy rats being a favorite.
Enclosures for a Flower Ratsnake
They enjoy temperatures in the mid 70's. Avoid housing these reptiles in high heat areas.
