Information and Care Sheet for the Albino Japanese Rat Snake

The Japanese Rat Snake (Elaphe climacophora) is a medium sized snake found on most all of the Japanese island, as well as the Russian island of Kunasir. In Japanese it is known as the Aodaishō or "Green General". It is a non-venomous snake, and a member of the Colubrid family. The color is rather variable, from pale yellow-green to a dark blue-green. The young snakes have a pattern of brown stripes, which may be an example of mimesis to the venomous mamushi.

Size of a Japanese Rat Snake

Adults reach a length of between 3.5 - 5.5 feet and a girth of about five centimeters, and is the largest Japanese snake outside of Okinawa.

Feeding a Japanese Rat Snake

Mice, rats, birds and eggs. The snakes strongly react at movements, especially if you feed on different times they strongly react on movements in the surroundings of the terrarium.

Caging Requirements for a Japanese Rat Snake

Housing/Habitat: An aquarium equipped with an under tank heating pad at one end, with aspen or repti-bark substrate. Landscape to provide basking areas, climbing areas, and plenty of hiding places. Ratsnakes are great escape artists and a secure locking cover is very important.
