The Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula (Grammostola rosea) is probably the most common species of tarantula available today. They are found throughout the desert and scrubland regions of Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. Females have been known to live as long as 15-20 years but there is a possibility that they may live considerably longer. Chilean Roses are relatively docile, low maintenance, and inexpensive.

This heavily-built beauty is dark brown to black but is covered with a coat of reddish-orange to pink hairs over its entire body. This subtle rose casting on the hair is where the name comes from. Mature males have longer legs and are somewhat more fuzzy in appearance. The female remains stocky and bulky throughout its life. There are reports that mature males are more brightly coloured than females but they can be quite variable in colour

Size of a Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula

The Chilean Rose Tarantula is a medium sized species. They reach adult size in about 3 to 4 years with about a 5 inch leg span.

Feeding Your Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula

Chilean Rose Tarantulas enjoy a diet of four to six crickets every three weeks (or one locust per week). The Chilean rose's feeding schedule is rather erratic, however; the spider can fast for weeks to months at a time. Fasting is sometimes an indication of an upcoming moult.

Caging Requirements for Your Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula

Housing/Habitat: Chilean Roses can be kept in a low-humidity terrarium at least twice the spiders' legspan in length, with a retreat for hiding.

Temperatures: They are quite happy living at room temperatures of around 72 - 86°F

Humidity: They can be kept in a low-humidity terrarium (60-75%), and this can be achieved by providing a shallow water dish and misting ocassionally as necessary.
