Information and Care Sheet for the Sulcata Tortoise

Sulcata Tortoises (Geochelone sulcata) are found in the hot, dry deserts of central Africa. It is the third largest species of tortoise in the world and the largest species of mainland tortoise (not found on an island).

Size and Lifespan of a Sulcata Tortoise

Hatchlings are 2 to 3 inches. They grow to between 6 and 10 inches within a few short years. Adults average 18 inches and 100 pounds although larger specimens are possible, especially males.

It is believed that they will live up to 80 years or more.

Feeding a Sulcata Tortoise

Dark, leafy greens such as collards, mustard, romaine, and red leaf lettuce. Carrot tops and beet greens can be offered, as should a variety of grasses and hays.

Caging Requirements for Your Sulcata Tortoises

Housing/Habitat: One or two babies can live in a 20 gallon aquarium. Increase the size of the enclosure as they get bigger. At 8 to 10 inches, they should be moved to an outdoor enclosure with a heated shelter for cold days/nights. Substrate can be almost anything. Provide lots of floor space and a hide such as a half log.

Temperature: A 90F basking spot while they are small and up to 100F for adults.

Lighting: Full spectrum UV lighting or unfiltered sunlight is required.
